There’s a moment on Highway 24 heading south out of Brantford where the landscape quietly changes. The fields flatten and lighten. The soil turns sandy — genuinely sandy, the kind you’d expect at a beach, not a farm. Woodlots thicken with trees that don’t belong this far north: tulip trees, sassafras, black gum. And then, if the wind is right and you’ve got the window down, you catch it — that first hint of lake air.
